The iPhone is a very fun phone to use .... and can increase productivity .... but it is not a challenge to the BlackBerry right now.

There are some other differences between the two device technologies that also impact this question.

1) By not having a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) the iPhone is missing some capabilities that are important to the Enterprise customers. Remote Kill is probably the most critical as a lost or stolen device could contain all kind of information that the company doesn't want exposed outside of the corporation. With a Blackberry on a BES a simple command will wipe the device of any useful information. OTA (Over The Air) enforcement of password requirements and similar is another powerful tool for the company IT and Security folks to be aware of. AFAIK there is no equivalent with the iPhone. There are others, but from an enterprise perspective these are probably the most critical.

2) Applications .... While there are some really cool iPhone applications out there, there seems to be a lack of business focus with them so far. That may change if iPhones gain significant enterprise acceptance, but I can see the possibility that these devices may experience a similar problem that we've seen with the MAC. In other words, a lack of business applications for a long time because the business world had standardized on another technology platform. Basically a situation like PC versus MAC. In this case RIM/Windows Mobile/Palm versus iPhone. Sure the iPhone might catch up eventually, but will it be enough to make a difference?

3) Security .... OK the iPhone has TLS. Some versions of the Blackberry have FIPS 140-2. Meaning they meet the standards mandated by the Feds and required for virtually all federal agencies. Which means that the same standards largely apply to many State agencies as well. Which means the same standards apply to many companies that do business with these agencies. Unless the iPhone meets that standard it's precluded from use with such companies/agencies.

4) Features .... The keyboard difference seems to be mentioned often. To many that's enough to keep them using their Blackberry. But to many employers, the entertainment focus of the iPhone is enough to make them unattractive. Many companies feel their employees face enough distractions as it is. Why put a device in their hands that makes it so easy to get distracted?

To summarize, I think the Blackberry is fairly safe for now. Nothing says the iPhone couldn't address it's shortcomings to become more attractive to the business enterprise. But they aren't there today.

Sony BMG to offer music through Nokia phones

Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker, said Tuesday that music company Sony BMG had agreed to join Nokia's music service programme, giving Nokia device users access to music published by Sony BMG.

The Nokia Comes With Music programme will give Nokia cellular owners the possibility to download unlimited music from various artists on their mobile phones and computers during the first year they own their Nokia device.

"Sony BMG Music Entertainment has officially joined Nokia Comes With Music, a revolutionary way for people to discover and enjoy music with their Nokia device," Nokia said in a statement.

After the first 12 months, Nokia customers get to keep the music they downloaded and can either buy new music or sign a subscription for unlimited access.

Previously, Universal Music Group International had said it would offer its music through the Finnish company's music platform, Nokia Music Store. Nokia also said it was in discussion with other international labels.

The mobile phone maker said it expected to launch its music service in the second half of 2008 on a range of Nokia devices in selected markets.

The Finnish company, whose devices sell well in emerging markets such as China, India and Latin America, is trying ensure future success by expanding from mere phonemaking into mobile phone software and services.

Nokia has long been struggling in the US markets and the new music service is seen as attempt to fight Apple's popular iPhone, launched last June.

It features a 5 mega pixel camera with built-in Power LED flash, image stabiliser, 4x digital zoom and face detection technology.

On the music side there is an MP3 Player which supports MP3, eAAC+, midi, melody,wav and mmf file formats, and an FM Stereo Radio with Bang & Olufsen patented ICE power technology for high sound quality.

The Quad Band GSM phone provides GPRS support, HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP stereo support and USB connectivity options.

A pay-as-you-go version of the phone is expected soon from T-Mobile, and the model is also expected to appear on other UK networks. It is also being launched in France and Germany.

Sony Ericsson will be launching the G502 and P5 mobile phones soon. However, a few of their details have been leaked over the internet. Let’s zoom into them

Sony Ericsson G502 is a candy-bar styled phone, which pretty much is on the lines of its predecessors K530 and K660. The forthcoming handset incorporates a 2MP fixed focus camera, 4x digital zoom and video recording, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, USB 2.0 support, 32 MB internal memory with expandable slot and Tri-band GSM phone with EDGE support. It measures 109×46x13.5mm and weighs in at 83.5 grams. Interestingly, the G502 supports the HSPDA function, offers Exchange Activesync and lets users access the integrated Google Maps for Mobile.

Coming to the other phone, the Sony Ericsson P5 will be powered by UIQ 3.3, will incorporate a secondary video call camera, GPS, 5MP, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connection. The P5’s keyboard layout will resemble the one that’s found in the M600, which has 2 characters on a key. It seems as though the shortcut button around the D-pad is using touch sensor like W960 walkman phones.

The Sony Ericsson G502 handset is expected to be available in two colors - hazel and black, and though there’s no official word on its pricing or availability, it could perhaps launch by June-end. No details about the pricing or launch date for the P5 mobile phone have been revealed yet.

Samsung Helio Mysto

Helio has been around for quite some time. Even though it hasn’t really made a big impact in the mobile market, its phones are very good and revved-up when compared to other phones in the market. With features like direct Flickr and YouTube uploads, Helio is trying to reach out to a wide audience.

The Helio Mysto is another product that Helio has just released. Physically, you’ll probably mistake it for the Samsung U600 phone. But unlike the U600, the Mysto is packed with tons of features such as built-in GPS, a robust instant -messaging software and e-mail interface, built-in EV-DO, a megapixel camera, and lots more.

The camera can also funtion as a camcorder but the video is limited to 320×240 and 176×144 resolutions and two frame rates, 14fps and 7fps. As a result, video quality is very jittery and choppy, especially when there’s a lot of movement, and images looked pixilated, too.

The music quality on the Mysto is also pretty good for what it is. A headset, however, is a much better way to to listen to it than the built-in speakers. There’s little to no bass, but the melody sounded fine, and it’ll do for a quick musical fix on your daily commute.

The Helio Mysto has a rated talk time of up to 3.5 hours.
